Oni

Oni is a single-player third-person action game from Bungie Software, which is best known for its Myth real-time strategy series, as well as its old Marathon first-person shooters. Oni is certainly a departure for the popular developer, which was recently acquired by Microsoft. Though die-hard fans might catch a rare reference to Bungie's other games in Oni, the game has nothing in common with any of its predecessors. Instead, its influences can be clearly traced to Japanese science-fiction-themed animated films and series, such as Ghost in the Shell, Akira, and Bubblegum Crisis, as well as Japanese 3D fighting games such as Tekken and Virtua Fighter. The game stays true to its roots: It features fluid, dynamic animation, some exciting combat sequences, and a fairly involving story that links everything together. However, Oni suffers from a few very noticeable problems and several smaller ones, which all serve to prevent the game from being entirely successful or enjoyable.

During the course of the game, you play as Konoko, a young woman with purple hair and a mysterious past. She is an expert in martial arts and is also proficient with various firearms, and you'll have to guide her through more than a dozen levels filled with treacherous enemy fighters who lie in ambush around virtually every corner. The game's story unfolds mostly through text memos you find, as well as dialogue in brief cutscenes that usually occur at the beginning and end of each mission. The dialogue is accompanied by close-up portraits of the characters doing the talking. These are generally well drawn, and the voice acting (which is in English) is generally convincing, such that you get a fairly good sense of the characters' distinct personalities. Even so, it's disappointing that both the hand-drawn character close-ups and the 3D character models themselves are so static. Neither the portraits nor the 3D characters' faces are animated, which can be distracting since many other games already feature 3D characters that are much more articulate or that at least move their mouths and blink their eyes. Nevertheless, some of the more action-packed cutscenes can be quite entertaining.

The game's animation is much more impressive during the actual combat sequences. Konoko realistically dashes around, backpedals, flips, leaps, punches, kicks, blocks, and more. Some of her more difficult combat moves, such as brutal backbreaker and a spinning chokehold that leaves the enemy slumping to the ground with a sprained neck, look great. Likewise, her enemies move about believably for the most part, and they will even sometimes stop to taunt Konoko in battle. Actually, these enemy characters often look much better than Konoko. Many of the enemies are wearing full suits of shiny, metallic battle armor, and since they're also typically wearing helmets or masks, you won't be distracted when they don't wince as you're beating them up. But Konoko's static facial features and her blocky, metallic-looking hair don't come across very well, although at least you'll see her wearing several different outfits over the course of the game, for variety's sake. The game has a few nice visual effects, most notably how large panes of glass shatter dramatically when hit by errant gunfire; but Oni also has a few graphical glitches, like defeated enemies that tend to clip straight through nearby walls and obstacles. There's a good variety of different enemies to fight, and you'll even notice that similar categories of foes still have several variations in stature and uniform color. Even so, you'll quickly find that most of the enemy characters in Oni use the same exact combat moves on you, not to mention the same exact fighting styles. So, regardless of their subtly different appearances or the difficulty you'll have in beating them, you'll find that most of the combat with enemy fighters maintains a fairly consistent form.

Fortunately, this form is quite good, though it can be very challenging. The game's default controls let you move Konoko with the keyboard, as well as look around, turn, and attack with the mouse. You can change these controls if you edit a configuration file in the game's directory, but the default setup is actually ideal once you get used to it. Even so, it is surprising that the game doesn't offer a more convenient means of configuring your controls, and it is still more surprising that the game doesn't support PC-compatible gamepads, especially since the game was developed simultaneously for the PlayStation 2 console. Nevertheless, once you remember the key layout, you'll find that you can make Konoko move about and attack with finesse.

You'll need all the finesse you can muster as you try to take on the superior enemy odds and firepower you'll face throughout the game. Typically, you'll come across between one and three or four opponents at a time. One or more of these will probably be toting a gun. There's no good way to avoid enemy gunfire except to keep moving, so you'll learn to either make a beeline for the gun-toting assailants or to fall back and lure them around corners. Your enemies are very aggressive, and they will always come at you - so you can often help even the odds by using defensive tactics and environmental obstacles. At least you can relieve your foes of their weapons fairly easily once you get up close, and you can use these and whatever limited ammunition they have remaining to your advantage. Oni actually features a rather diverse and interesting variety of weapons. The arsenal includes conventional pistols and submachine guns, as well as stronger plasma and beam weapons, an incredibly powerful grenade launcher, and a very deadly sniper rifle weapon that must spend several seconds freezing over between firing its chilling mercury bolts. Unfortunately, there are no melee weapons in Oni, and though the ranged weapons are interesting, they do start to get repetitive toward the end of the game.

Final Fantasy VII

According to some rumours based around leaked information that appeared on one of Square Enix's websites, Final Fantasy VII, perhaps the most well beloved of all the series, could be getting a re-release on the PC - something fans of the game have been clamouring for for years.

Ever since Square teased us with the Final Fantasy VII tech demo during the early days of the PS3, people have been wanting a remake. A nice graphical overhaul, perhaps a few UI improvements, it wouldn't need much. Despite this however, Square has always vehemently denied that it was working on anything like that.

Now however, the rumour mill is spinning up again because the page - cached here - stated that there would be the classic Final Fantasy VII for PC, with a "host of new online features." These would include achievements, a "character booster" that would allow for stat tweaking - cheating - and a cloud save feature.

SHANK 2

Sequels are a funny thing. When a game is good-but-not-quite-great, we see the smallest solutions to itty bitty flaws, a few things that could have been spectacular given just a little more spit-shined development time. Yet those few tiny tweaks typically aren't enough to regenerate interest, never mind entertain for hours on end, when a sequel turns up. It' almost as if that game had its chance, and now we expect more, more, more.

Shank 2 doesn't reinvent itself in the slightest, which is why, more than most sequels, it's difficult not to compare it to the original. Developer Klei used past criticisms to patch its pants and glue its building blocks together. It shuffles its pieces around, finds better places for them to fit, and defies the idea that overhauling a flawed experience is absolutely necessary.

The result is, of course, a better 2D brawler, the kind most wished it would have been the first time around -- and it'll absolutely turn your Shank crank again.

Shank 2 addresses flaws Klei is acutely aware of, so it practically shouts about how much better it is now than it used to be. Main character Shank dodges with an effortless flick of the right stick, which is a massive step up from the clunky trigger/stick combo from the first game.

Attacking and healing aren't tied to the same button as they were previously. Where the animation system used to inhibit Shank, it now enables him: He moves faster, pounces farther and higher, and can switch between weapons mid-combo without a split-second delay signing his death certificate. In addition, exclamation marks above enemies' heads act as an instant-death counter-kill indicator, which is massively helpful for plucking particularly troublesome guys from a group. Also, disarming and executing dudes is quick enough not to break your rhythm, but slow enough to glorify the grossness of kicking a baseball bat down someone's throat. Uninterrupted murder is a beautiful blend of graceful fluidity and harsh ferocity, and few melee-centric action games achieve this kind of big-combo bliss.

The combat is improved for more than basic input reasons, too. Enemies attack in different ways from various places -- dudes chuck grenades from across the screen, careful shooters take precise pistol aim from above, and maniacal machine-gunners fire bursts in your general direction. Instant-kill pits make short work of bad guys (and you) too, and throwing switches to crush five guys beneath a shipping container is sickening fun. Each encounter is an unpredictable puzzle where evasion, aggression, and an impressive array of acrobatics earn you a personal accomplishment greater than any leaderboard high score.

Juggling and switching from your quick-attack shanks to a heavy sledgehammer to the shotgun aren't just cool-looking tactics -- they're completely necessary to surviving. By comparison, the first game is slow, unsatisfying, and cumbersome. (Really, you can never go back.) Shank 2 is demanding, and in a 2D action game so reliant on player precision, these simple tweaks make your life a hell of a lot easier.

Even the most difficult problems in Shank 2 have easy solutions. More importantly, its harshest conditions can't come close to the maddening challenge of its predecessor. This is perhaps the best step forward -- the first Shank had some ridiculously difficult spots. In Shank 2, you'll only bash your head against the occasional brick wall as long as you let it stand. When shotgun blasts or the scythe aren't doing enough damage to certain characters, swapping to the revolver or chainsaw is usually enough to take 'em down. Main character Shank no longer switches weapons on the fly during a level, though, and must instead trade gear between deaths. It's small inconvenience, but knowing weapon properties -- bonus damage against fat enemies or a knock-back effect, for instance -- and changing your strategy accordingly is the key to powering through tougher sections. Boss battles are a particularly great example of these and the rest of Shank's greatest design elements coming together. As bosses are meant to be, they're the final exam for everything you've learned along the way -- if you didn't pick up on and make use of something new and important, you're going to have a tough time with their interesting patterns and brutal attacks.

Assassin's Creed 3

Assassin's Creed 3 offers a new challenge. "It's harder on this game," lead writer Matt Turner admits at a London preview event. "This time period is very well documented so you have to pay attention to it.

"It can be annoying at times because you're like, 'I just want this to happen!' But then at the same time it gives you an opportunity to recreate these situations in peoples' lives.

"Everyone knows what George Washington looks like - he's on the American one dollar bill - but they don't know who he is."
In our full interview Turner discussed the challenges of working in one of the most well documented periods of history ever, separating the series from Dan Brown's work and more...

Ubisoft's already calling Assassin's Creed 3 its "biggest game ever"...

Our goal is a lofty one and to do that you need time and people. Basically when we set our sights that high we realised we needed to arm ourselves with the tools to accomplish that. It's one thing to say 'we want to make the best game we've ever made', and another to actually do it.

We started with a huge development window which allows two-to-three years to get it done, then the next step was capacity. We have actually twice the amount of resources we've ever had before on Assassin's Creed. That's allowing us the ability to create a bigger world and create something on a scale that we haven't reached before.

You heard yesterday the frontier map is 1.5 times the size of AC: Brotherhood's Rome - and that's just one map. The scale of the game is huge and that comes from people and time.

Hitman: Absolution

When it comes to Hitman: Absolution, pre-order means pre-play. In a move that could have ramifications for what it means to pre-purchase a videogame, Square Enix and GameStop have revealed Hitman: Sniper Challenge, a standalone Agent 47 experience, complete with online leaderboards and monthly prizes, that Hitman: Absolution pre-order customers will be able to play on PC beginning in August. That's almost four months before Absolution's just announced November 20 release.

I've gotta admit, I'm not a pre-order guy. The various skins and weapons typically provided for buying a game before it's released do nothing for me. But an entire standalone game? Now you're talking.

The rundown on Hitman: Sniper Challenge from Square:
Players can don the suit of Agent 47 as he takes on an exclusive assassination assignment. From a balcony overlooking a rooftop gathering, players will be tasked with taking out Richard Strong, Jr., CEO of Stallion Armaments, along with his entire staff of bodyguards. Skilled players will capitalize on score multipliers, hidden secrets, unlock equipment upgrades and marvel at the many creative ways one can discretely dispose of a body while they work to fulfil their contract in the most efficient way possible.
Hitman: Absolution pre-orders open on May 15. The Steam download of Hitman: Sniper Challenge will be ready for download on August 1. Sniper Challenge is a GameStop exclusive.

The Unveiling of GTA V

Story
Grand Theft Auto V heads to the city of Los Santos, San Andreas, and its surrounding hills, countryside and beaches. Money is a major theme in GTA V, with the official trailer emphasizing the stark contrast between the wealthy and the poor. The game takes place in the present day.

The Unveiling of GTA V
GTA V was announced on Rockstar's website on October 25, 2011, just a few days after the tenth anniversary of Grand Theft Auto III. Every web page on Rockstar's website (even the old Vice City and San Andreas pages!) was replaced with a page containing the GTA V logo and a release date for the upcoming debut trailer. The page also promoted the Twitter hashtag #GTAV.

The following week, the trailer revealed that the game is set in the Los Angeles-inspired city of Los Santos. Shortly after, Grand Theft Auto V was officially announced in a Take-Two Interactive press release. In it, Rockstar confirmed that "Grand Theft Auto V heads to the city of Los Santos and surrounding hills, countryside and beaches in the largest and most ambitious game Rockstar has yet created." Furthermore, they stated that GTA V is "a bold new direction in open-world freedom, storytelling, mission-based gameplay and online multiplayer [..] focusing on the pursuit of the almighty dollar in a re-imagined, present-day Southern California."

Release Date
GTA 5 will be released in 2012, assuming there are no delays. After Rockstar announces a game, they tend to market it for 7-8 months, which means that GTAV is likely to be released during the summer of 2012. If not, it will probably be released in September or October.

Platforms
There have been no reports of a new Xbox or PlayStation console arriving any time soon. It is therefore likely that the new GTA will be developed for the current generation of consoles, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. A PC version will hopefully be developed in addition to this. Grand Theft Auto was born on the PC in 1997, but in recent times the console versions have taken priority, with the PC versions typically arriving 8 months after the original release date.

After the troubled release of GTA IV PC, however, Rockstar may opt not to develop a PC version of GTA5. Hopefully that isn't the case, but only time will tell. The great thing about PC versions is the ability they give players to modify the games' content, which extends their lifespan considerably. The PC version of San Andreas is still incredibly popular, 6 years after its release, thanks to all the awesome cars, weapons, multiplayer mods and mission mods generated by fans.

The Incredible Hulk

Marvel Entertainment seemingly can't go wrong. They've published hugely successful comic book franchises (The X-Men, The Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, countless others) and have had tremendous success with movie adaptations of those comic books (Iron Man has grossed over $311 million so far, according to Rotten Tomatoes).  Sadly, things go downhill quickly once you enter the world of video game adaptations.

There are a few words most gamers hate to hear when it comes to video games: "movie tie-in" is one; "console port" is another.  With Sega's The Incredible Hulk for PC, gamers get the worst of both worlds: a bad movie tie-in and a horrible console port.

On the heels of the recently released Iron Man video game (Metacritic average score of 44 out of 100), The Incredible Hulk is wreaking havoc on the PC, but not in a good way.

The game's plot vaguely ties in with the film, with some moments of the film recreated, but the majority of the game is sandbox style, with the player in Manhattan, free to roam about the city as the Hulk, scaring pedestrians, smashing taxi cabs, or taking missions.

The Incredible Hulk features voice acting by the stars of the film: Edward Norton as Bruce Banner, Liv Tyler as Betty Ross, William Hurt as General Ross, and Tim Roth as Emil Blonsky.  This is perhaps the one good thing about this game.

First off, let's get this out of the way: the graphics are horrible.  Ugly.  This seems to be a port of the PS2 version.  The Hulk himself is the only element nicely textured and animated.  Everything else is plain.  The PC port of Spider-Man: The Game from 2002 did a better job of presenting a believable Manhattan.  This Manhattan is sparsely populated (and you see the same NPC characters all over the place) with some vehicles driving around the streets.  Yes, there are lots of buildings but they are just sort of there.  Couldn't we have gotten some reflective window textures on those buildings? It would have been nice to see sunlight reflected off of those windows.

There are no adjustments to be made for the game's graphics; the only thing you can change is the game's resolution.  This is a game that has not heard of such things as HDR lighting and normal mapping.  Believe me, this is not the game to show off on your killer gaming rig.  I'd go as far as to say 2003's video game tie-in of Ang Lee's The Hulk is a better looking game, and that's a game using an engine that's over five years old.

You can control the Hulk with a mouse and keyboard, but the best option is a game controller (I used the Xbox 360 wireless controller for Windows), this being a console port and all.

Most missions seem to revolve around the Hulk battling various armies, while tossing in video game standards like escort missions, protect a Person of Importance, etc.  It all gets a bit repetitive after a few minutes.

As you progress you unlock power upgrades, attack combos, and the like.

Most of the environment is destructible, but even that's not much of an incentive to play.  There really is nothing here to enjoy.  Skip this game and see the movie instead.  Better yet, hunt up Amazon or Ebay for a used copy of 2003's The Hulk.
